Bianca Easton is a proud BoonWurrung woman who was born in Naarm and raised around the coast of the bay. She is an artist and facilitator who runs workshops teaching weaving, arts and crafts for community organisations, schools, business and corporations. The waterways, beach, plants and Country in general inspire her ever-evolving art practice and she is always inspired to learn more.
Bianca has been very fortunate and grateful to learn to weave and craft from Elders and other community members and now enjoys sharing this practice with others, especially with Community, the next generation.
Bianca is passionate about art and being creative, and believes that it is incredibly healing, a way to reconnect with self, Culture, community and a valuable tool to help deal with trauma and to practise self care.
Coil weaving is the traditional form of weaving for the Kulin Nation. In this workshop we will learn to make a small basket from raffia using this traditional technique and discuss which plants were used in different parts of the country and the basic history of this and other forms of weaving and their practical applications.
As we weave we will embed the stories and discussions into the basket as a keepsake of the season. As the basket grows, so to will the days after the Spring Equinox and you will leave with the materials to continue your basket at home.
This workshop is best suited to ages 10+. Alternative activities will be provided for children under 10 who are attending with a workshop participant.
Workshop participants are welcome to stay on afterwards for our Spring Equinox Gathering and potluck from 5pm - 9pm.
